The Jersey City Redevelopment Agency has released a Final version of
the Morris Canal Brownfield Inventory.  Done in partnership with New
Jersey City University and the City of Jersey City, with grant funds
from the New Jersey Association of Environmental Commissioners, the
inventory is the most comprehensive Brownfield site inventory ever
created for the Morris Canal Redevelopment Area, located in the
Lafayette neighborhood of Jersey City.  Brownfields, former commercial
or industrial sites that are known or perceived to be contaminated, are
a major impediment to urban redevelopment.  The inventory was compiled
with data from a variety of sources, including the NJDEP*s Known
Contaminated Site List (KCSL), Brownfield Site Mart, and local
environmental site reports.  Data for different sites have been
cross-referenced in a database in order to eliminate duplication and
confusion, and are geo-referenced on maps utilizing Geographic
Information System (GIS) technology thanks to land parcel data provided
by the City.  This new inventory, in conjunction with City and
stakeholder vision, will be critical to the redevelopment to the
significant vacant and underutilized areas within the Morris Canal
Redevelopment Area.

With the inventory as complete as practicable for the present, project
personnel have now begun a community outreach effort that will serve to
both inform the public and facilitate stakeholder feedback that will
help improve and expand the inventory.  The Agency requests that
comments, edits, additional information, etc be sent to the Agency no
